While the demand for counseling and psychotherapy is increasing in this ever-growing and ever-complicating world, traditional theories and methods are becoming less useful because of the rapid change in people's lifestyles due to technological developments and because of an increase in clients with various ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This volume provides helpful and instructive information on counseling and psychotherapy, including discussions of theoretical innovations and proposals for new practices that transcend ethnic/cultural differences. It also includes chapters addressing the status of counseling services in African states under the COVID-19 pandemic.

"Groupwork with Refugees and Survivors of Human Rights Abuses describes, explores and promotes the power of groupwork for refugees and survivors of human rights abuses in a range of contexts. Drawing on multiple theoretical approaches, the book features chapters from practitioners running groups in different settings such as torture rehabilitation services, refugee camps, and reception centres. The voices of participants demonstrate the variety, creativity and value of group and community approaches for recovery. The editors have gathered chapters into three sections covering: community-based approaches; groups that work through the medium of 'body and soul'; and group approaches that focus on change through the spoken word. The book will be relevant to those working in rehabilitation, community, mental health, and humanitarian fields and are interested in using groupwork as part of their services"-- Provided by publisher.

"Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing therapy (EMDR) is a unique, empirically validated approach that is recommended by the World Health Organization as a "first line treatment for post traumatic stress disorder in adults." EMDR therapy emphasizes working with imagery, cognitions, emotions, somatic sensations, and behavior linked to a disturbing memory, as well as attending to past, current, and future-oriented experiential contributors. Unlike many psychotherapeutic treatments, EMDR does not require prolonged exposure, the direct challenging of beliefs, or numerous sessions to achieve results. In this book, Dr. Shapiro, the originator of this approach, and Dr. Russell, her longtime colleague and collaborator, describe their work and the significant controversy that attended its rise due to EMDR's challenging of traditional cognitive behavioral approaches to psychotherapy and mechanisms of change. The authors describe the theory of EMDR, provide the complete EMDR therapeutic protocol, the evidence base that supports it, and examine practical issues and common challenges related to implementing EMDR in clinical practice"--

This book draws on existential theory and original research to present the conceptual framework for an understanding of existential authenticity and demonstrates how this approach might be adopted in practice. The authors explore how a non-mediated connection with authentic lived experience might be established and introduced into everyday living. Drs. Jonathan Davidov and Pninit Russo-Netzer begin by introducing readers to the core theoretical concepts before illustrating how this might be applied in a therapeutic practice. It appeals to scholars and practitioners with an interest in existential psychology, phenomenology, and their broad implications. Jonathan Davidov is a teaching fellow at the University of Haifa, researcher, and a practicing psychotherapist in Israel. Dr. Davidov’s research interests are existential and phenomenological psychology and human behavior under extreme situations and in significant turning points in life. He has published several scholarly journal articles on these topics. Pninit Russo-Netzer is a senior lecturer, researcher, and the head of the Education Department at Achva Academic College. Dr. Russo-Netzer is a logotherapist, the founder and the head of the “Compass” Institute for the Study and Application of Meaning in life, and the founder and head of the Academic Training Program for Logotherapy (meaning-oriented psychotherapy) at Tel-Aviv University. Her main research and practice interests focus on meaning in life, positive psychology, existential psychology, spirituality, positive change, and growth. She has published books and scholarly journal articles on these topics.
